The Continuum of Care

Navigating mental health and substance use treatment requires understanding the different levels of care. Each level offers tailored support to meet individual needs, ensuring the right care at the right stage of recovery. Facilities vary in the levels they offer, and they assess each person to determine the most appropriate care based on medical necessity.

Outpatient Services (OP)

The least intensive level, suitable for those managing symptoms with periodic professional support. Services include individual therapy, group therapy, and medication management, typically on a weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly basis.

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

IOP offers frequent, structured support when extra help is needed beyond outpatient therapy or as a transition from inpatient care. Therapy sessions occur multiple times a week, often including group therapy and skill-building activities.

Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)

More intensive than IOP but less than inpatient care, PHP is for those needing substantial support without 24-hour supervision. It includes therapy, medication management, and educational sessions, typically 5 days a week.

Residential Treatment (RTC)

Provides 24-hour care in a live-in facility for those needing long-term structured support when other levels of care are ineffective. RTC offers intensive therapy, medical supervision, and structured daily activities. Stays range from a few weeks to several months.

Acute Detox

Designed for individuals with severe withdrawal symptoms from substances like alcohol or opioids. This care occurs in hospitals or dedicated detox facilities with 24/7 medical supervision.

Acute Inpatient Hospitalization (IP)

The most intensive level, for individuals in acute crisis needing immediate, 24-hour medical and psychiatric care. It’s a short-term intervention, usually lasting a few days to a couple of weeks, before transitioning to lower levels of care.
